The visitor route is signposted and two to three hours is enough at an unhurried pace. The museum at the entrance, built around finds from the excavations, is worth seeing first: it gives you the context before you walk the site itself. The area is largely open ground, so a hat and water in summer, and a windproof coat in winter, make the visit easier. Comfortable shoes matter in every season. The famous wooden horse standing on the waterfront in town is the prop gifted to Çanakkale from the film, about five minutes' walk from the hotel — not to be confused with the one at the ancient site.

The pier is a short walk (5-10 minutes) from our hotel, so the day starts on foot; crossing the strait is as much a part of the history as the sites themselves. Once across, the Martyrs' Memorial is roughly an hour away. The places worth seeing are spread across the peninsula: the Martyrs' Memorial, Chunuk Bair, Anzac Cove, the 57th Regiment Cemetery and Kilitbahir Castle among them. We suggest setting aside a full day so none of it is rushed. You can drive yourself, or join a guided tour departing from Çanakkale; a guide is especially worthwhile on a first visit, because without the stories a hill on this peninsula remains only a hill. Please remember that this is a memorial landscape and is treated with respect.
Can You Do Troy and Gallipoli in One Day?
This is among the questions we are asked most, and our honest answer is: technically yes, but we would not recommend it. The two sites are on opposite sides of the strait, and compressing them into one day turns it into an exercise in ferry timetables and driving, leaving you with half a visit to each. A far more comfortable two-day plan looks like this: on day one, head to Troy after breakfast, return to the hotel in the afternoon, and spend the evening walking the waterfront, taking in the Naval Museum and the Trojan Horse. Give day two entirely to Gallipoli — cross on an early ferry and return in the evening. Two nights in Çanakkale, and both destinations seen properly. With Çanakkale Airport just fourteen minutes from the hotel, this two-day plan works just as well for guests arriving by air.
Small Details That Make the Day Easier
Both trips are spent largely outdoors, so a little preparation shows. Setting off early is the most practical way to avoid both the crowds and the summer heat. Bring water, sun protection and comfortable shoes; in winter, a windproof layer is worth having, as the wind off the strait makes itself felt. Distances between the sites at Gallipoli mean a light snack in your bag is useful.
