Watching the gulls from the ferry deck, counting ships and feeling the wind is the moment many families remember most. A light jacket for the wind and a small snack for the deck are all you need. Troy is thirty-five minutes from our hotel and can certainly be visited with children — but plan two hours rather than the three we suggest for adults. The site is an open-air, signposted walking route; for school-age children, telling the story of the horse beforehand transforms the visit — 'these are the walls of that city' is a sentence that stays with a child for a long time. The museum at the entrance is a good refuge on hot or rainy days. Gallipoli is a longer day (about an hour's journey including the ferry) with distances between the sites; with small children it is more realistic to choose the Martyrs' Memorial and one or two other points rather than the whole peninsula. Explaining simply that this is a memorial landscape makes the visit both respectful and meaningful. On both trips, water, hats and comfortable shoes are essential.

A Sample Two-Day Plan for Families
Day one: the Trojan Horse and the Naval Museum on the waterfront after breakfast, lunch on the promenade, back to the hotel for a nap, the ferry to Kilitbahir and an hour at the castle in the late afternoon, then an evening walk along the waterfront. Day two: an early start to Troy (two hours), back to town for lunch, the afternoon at the beach or free time on the promenade.
